In the novel Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes, Keyes uses the trajectory of Alice’s change in character to indicate the demeaning and impressionable roles played by women in society. In addition to literary examples presented in the novel, Keyes includes an excerpt from Plato’s â€Å"Allegory of the Cave† to emphasize the connection between Alice/Miss Kinnian’s role in the novel and the common woman’s leadership role in society. Although Alice and Miss Kinnian are the same character, they serve different purposes in the plot. Miss Kinnian is present pre-operation and represents Charlie’s need for mental improvement, which she motivates him to achieve. Alice, however, comes about post-operation and serves as a motivation for Charlie’s need for emotional improvement. This is related to the roles of women in society because in Charlie’s perspective, Miss Kinnian symbolizes women s leadership through her knowledge and skill. However, as Charlie begins to gain knowledge and is able to identify himself as the leader, Miss Kinnian becomes â€Å"Alice† and she changes to symbolize the more common roles of women: sympathizers and pleasers.
